Helical Walls

About Helical Anchor Walls:  A helical anchor retaining wall uses anchors, or tiebacks for stability. With one end of the tieback attached to the wall, the other end of the helical anchor is driven into the soil behind the structure.  Helical anchors can be used as permanent or temporary slope stabilization.

Design Considerations: Helical anchors are a factory-manufactured steel anchor system consisting of a central shaft with one or more helix-shaped bearing plates, commonly referred to as blades, welded to the lead section. Extension shafts, with or without additional helix plates, are used to extend the anchor into competent load-bearing soils. Helical anchors are advanced (“screwed”) into the ground with the application of torque. The terms helical piles, screw piles, helical piers, helical anchors, helix piers, and helix anchors are often used interchangeably by specifiers. However, the term “pier” more often refers to a helical foundation system loaded in axial compression, while the term “anchor” more often refers to a helical foundation system loaded in axial tension.

When to Use:
Helical anchor walls can be constructed for temporary or permanent stabilization of a slope.  In a temporary application the helical anchors, combined with a chain-link or other stabilization system, are used to stabilize the slope during construction of modular block walls and the anchors are removed as the wall is constructed.  In a permanent application the helical anchors can be used to stabilize and prevent overturning of existing structures.  Helicals can also be used to perform underpinning which generally used when a building is undergoing renovation or any event where there is concern about the integrity of the foundation.

Helical Walls in North Georgia:  Helical anchor walls or helical underpinning might be the perfect solution for your retaining wall.  Fortress Walls and Hardscapes has installed helical systems in and around Peachtree Corners, Brookhaven, Buckhead, Vinings, or Cumming.
