Gabion Walls

About Gabion Walls:  Gabion basket walls are typically used by civil engineers in the fight against erosion. Gabions are commonly used to fortify and stabilize streambanks, as baffles for detention ponds.  Gabion basket walls are gravity walls that are constructed of steel baskets filled with large stone.  The large stone in the baskets gives the wall enough mass to withstand the impact of water which can slow down the water in some cases or prevent erosion in other cases.  The gabion baskets are the bottom of the wall are the largest and they get smaller as you near the top.  The design of the gabion basket system will depend on the application and contributing pressures of the earth behind the wall.  Gabion basket walls can also be constructed as “free-standing” if the application calls for it.

Design Considerations: Used for thousands of years by structural engineers, gabions provide an attractive and effective structure that can be used to prevent erosion or slow the flow of water.  Gabions are somewhat difficult to construct due to the mass of rock required for the system which in most cases makes them more expensive to build than typical retaining walls.  However, there are specific applications where gabions must be used because traditional retaining wall systems will not perform in the same way.

When to Use:
The massive gabion structure can be used as a baffle for detention ponds, streambank stabilization, or as decorative accent structures.  The system as a whole is durable and built of strong materials that will last for 50-60 years.  Gabion baskets can be made of steel that is PVC coated or galvanized to extend the life of the structure.

Gabion Walls in North Georgia: Gabion walls can be a very effective option for your application.  Fortress Walls and Hardscapes will help you to determine the best system to be used for your project.   Let Fortress take care of your retaining wall needs in Atlanta, Alpharetta, Roswell, Johns Creek, Norcross, and Peachtree Corners.  We work throughout the southeastern united states so let us know how we can help.
