Exposed Concrete

About Exposed Concrete:  Exposed concrete, also known as exposed aggregate concrete allows the gravel usually hidden in concrete to show through, adding texture and a unique look to walkways and outdoor walls. The pebble-like finish is especially well-suited for pool deck surfaces because it’s highly slip resistant. For more dramatic results, you can enhance or complement the colors and textures of the decorative aggregate by using stones in contrasting colors or by combining areas of smooth and exposed aggregate finishes.

Design Considerations:  Once the concrete has been placed, the decorative aggregate is ready to be revealed. There are several exposure methods we can choose from, depending on the look desired and size of the project. Only the top of the stone is exposed while the rest remains permanently embedded in the concrete. The general rule of thumb is to remove the surface mortar to a depth no more than one-third the diameter of the aggregate particle.

When to Use:
Skid resistant and durable, aggregate concrete is ideal for walkways and driveways, and can be used to add texture to any retaining wall. The resulting surface is rugged, nonskid, and resistant to heavy traffic and weather extremes. Many types and sizes of decorative aggregate are available to achieve unlimited color and texture variations. Exposed aggregate is highly versatile and contrasts beautifully with plain concrete or other decorative treatments such as stamping, stenciling, staining, and integral coloring. Little maintenance is required, other than sealing and occasional cleaning.
