About Modular Walls:  Modular block retaining walls, or MSE walls, are a popular solution used by engineers to optimize the space available to build on a site.  Modular walls can be built as cut walls (against a slope) or fill walls (filling in a slope).  Modular walls are typically more cost effective than other retaining wall systems such as cast-in place concrete (CIP) or gravity walls.  The system comprises of segmental retaining walls blocks with a stone footing where the blocks are connected to a system of geogrid that is built into a reinforced soil mass.  Modular walls are very flexible in design an applications.

Design Considerations: When designing a modular block retaining wall engineers must consider all conditions around the wall and the soils required to construct the structure.  Designers have a choice on the size, shape, and color of the blocks used for the face of the wall.  With proper engineering, modular block walls can be used in a variety of applications including site fill walls, site cut walls, amenity area accent walls, free-standing walls, or even detention pond retaining walls.

When to Use:  The main advantage of modular walls over reinforced concrete walls is quick construction and the ease of installation. In many cases, there is also a cost savings over other retaining wall options. Other important considerations include the vertical height of the area to reinforce, and whether the wall serves an aesthetic purpose.
